NOT TO WORRY, IT IS ONLY TAXPAYER MONEY
1.  THEY KEEP ON SPENDING
Spending as a disease would be a worthwhile area for investigation by social science. Its brother is a disease that postulates money spent by the Feds, State, and County is not tax money and can be spent without anybody noticing. However, it is still tax money taken from someone who earned it. The government has no money of its own.  If you are a taxpayer you paid taxes to the Florida Inland Navigation District, the ECHO fund, and the County which then gives it to the City CRA and others with their hand out. When the Feds give money to the City for fireman salaries that is your tax money. The point is that when the City wastes money, including that from grants, it is squandering everyone’s money at every level of government.

After a year of waiting for the newly elected Commissioners to find  their  footing as business oriented and financial thrifty candidates, we find that they are little different from their predecessors when it comes to understanding that to keep on spending, seeking grants, and not addressing financial waste like funding the fire department

pension plans,  is not acceptable. When the City Manager states that she did not raise taxes, it is a direct lie, and no one corrects her. When the golf course reports phony profits and the deficit continues, they continue to quote the phony figures as if they are true.  Are they very gullible or stupid?  How many times last year and this did Commissioner Reiker say that the golf course was operating in the black?  Please look at the numbers.  How long will it be before they decide that free rent or $25 dollars a year for millions of dollars worth of property is unfair to the taxpayer?  How many times will they permit the City Manager to have consultant contracts that farm out her job?  It would seem that this will go on until we throw them out as nothing but tax and spend politicians we neither can tolerate nor accept as people who care.   When will they get the message?

You want an example of bad public policy?  They squeezed $400,000 out of Home Depot for “tree mitigation” which is nothing but a slush fund for the City Manager to fund a new signage consultant and another contract farming out her management responsibilities.  Now understand this rip off of a business that does not encourage other businesses to build here. Think about it.

They pat themselves on the back and tell each other what a good job they are doing. Do they congratulate themselves because they are that gullible or because they believe they are not quite as bad as their predecessors?  Either way, their failure to address the pressing problems of too much management, too highly paid management, and runaway benefits for the fire department personnel which are unfunded and unaffordable, has continued to be an indictment of their failure.

2. CRA GRANT TO A BUSINESS TO PROMOTE ITS OWN BUSINESS AND THAT OF ITS MEMBERS

The Shadow believes this is prohibited. Where are the State and the County investigators?
THIS WEEK WE ARE PUBLISHING A LITE VERSION OF THE SHADOW            WITH THE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY SOME OF OUR LEVITY.
NOT TO WORRY, IT'S ONLY TAXPAYER MONEY.
NOTE

The Shadow is amazed that certain posters on the BLOG concern themselves with things like layout, the private life of the publisher, and attacks upon the veracity of the articles.  May the Shadow suggest that they comment on whether the community received its money’s worth when it gave Karen Clancy $5,000 before an event which “may” put as many as 5 heads in beds?  If you want to be constructive, tell the City why you think this was an appropriate grant.  We wont (wont is a cute and shorter way to put it rather than will not) be intimidated.

We hope that all of our winter visitors bring ice skates to Sunny Florida.  We wonder what sizes the merchants on Canal Street stock. Or can you buy them at a local surf shop?  They claim they are building an ice rink on Flagler. It will probably with your tax money one way or another!

City to our north was pretty busy and gas was 12 cents cheaper today. Got back here and saw Canal boycott still in effect. No shoppers, just pregnant teens. Folks in Jacksonville allowed growth to come in and people to open businesses. They are doing better they have a beach and a job base.

Incredible. The USA is accelerating towards insolvency and more money is being dumped into MDC, a nonessential money pit.
Maybe I'm the dumb one for not starting my own tax-funded nature conservancy program.

I agree that the offering of incentives to try to entice businesses to relocate into a town like NSB or Edgewater seem to make little sense. You'd think a City would want to try and give great service to existing businesses in an effort to retain them or increase the likelihood of success. Those experienced in relocations are wary of such deals made up front. Savvy relocation consultants put incentives low on their list of priorities. The first thing they look at is successful supporting businesses, quality of life and education of the potential workforce. Incentives are icing on the cake. NSB need only look at Edgewater to see the bad deals they made giving incentives to the boat building industry. I don't think NSB is looking for bottom feeding paper container manufacturers like those still scattered around upstate New York and the northeast. Nor do I think this area has the required workforce to attract high tech "green" manufacturing. I could be wrong; but in consideration of the aforementioned, I don't really see what good incentives from the CC will do.

What's the big deal at least 10 people shop on Canal Street that's why the biggest signs say for sale / for rent. Notice fishing store has been sending kid up on 44 with a sign to try to bring business in. They know Canal is dead.

Taxes Now And Then

What Happened?  At first, we thought this was funny...then realized the awful truth of it.  Be sure to read all the way to the end!

Tax his land, Tax his bed, Tax the table at which he's fed.

Tax his tractor, Tax his mule, Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his cow, Tax his goat, Tax his pants, Tax his coat, Tax his ties, Tax his shirt, Tax his work, Tax his dirt, Tax his tobacco, Tax his drink, Tax him if he Tries to think.

Tax his cigars, Tax his beers, if he cries, then Tax his tears.

Tax his car, Tax his gas, Find other ways to tax his ass.

Tax all he has then let him know that you won't be done Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers, then tax him some more, Tax him until He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin, Tax his grave, Tax the sod in which he's laid.

Put these words upon his tomb, Taxes drove me to my doom...
